View Full Version : Wrestling Match Of The Day!

I'm bringing this idea back. As I stated in my last post on the old board, this was always my favorite wrestling based thread. Oh, by the way, did anyone correctly answer my question about who the masked Ciclope unmasked to be at the Slamboree '98 cruiserweight battle royal? The answer was Dean Malenko.
My WMOTD: Dan Maff & BJ Whitmer vs. Ace Steel & CM Punk, ROH, Chicago Street Fight. This match was awesome. It had good psychology, awesome spots, violence, and the chair thing at the end was awesome, albeit a ripoff of the ECW Cactus/Terry/Public Enemy incident. **** (I'm a CM Punk mark, so I probably rated it a little too high for other people's tastes.)
My match of the day:
(vacant) WCW Cruiserweight Title - Great American Bash 1998
Dean Malenko vs. Chris Jericho
The match itself was short but pretty decent with Jericho being in his prime back in those days. There were a few unique and skillful wrestling counters throughout. Jericho gets the upper hand and rips the piss out of Malenko's dead dad forcing Dean to snap and get DQ'd for hitting Jericho with a chair. The fight goes backstage and eventually out to the street where Jericho runs away. Nothing was done with the title.
Rating: **1/4
It could have been a lot better had it been given more time and had a proper finish.

My match is The Great Muta vs The Great Nita in a barb wire match.

I was never a fan of Atsushi Onita. Muta/Mutoh hasn't impressed me since the early 90s, although I was a big fan of his then.
Clive Myers vs. Steve Gray from 1975. This is classic British style wrestling, fought in rounds. It's interesting to see the differences between it and American wrestling, especially at that time. This is actually a very good match, and Clive Myers is very impressive. The highlight of the match is the referee. The way he counts is hilarious. It sounds like something from a Mr. Bean episode.
Classic British wrestling is great to watch only I hate the spoken three count.

Yes, this is very true. I remember his series of matches against Mr. Pogo, and I thought his work was mediocre, but he could pop a usually reserved crowd pretty well, and he could sell pretty well.

I have a match somewhere where it's a grand slam: Henning vs. Bossman, with Monsoon and Lord Alfred announcing.
My WMOTD: Doug Furnas and Dan Kroffat (later known in the WWF as Phil LaFon) vs. KENTA and Kikuchi, May '92, AJPW. In the two or three matches involving Kikuchi that I have downloaded, he does nothing but take punishment until tagging someone else in. This applies here, and when Kobashi is tagged in, he whips some ass. Furnas and Kroffat were an excellent tag team, and if given the chance, could have become big here in the States. Kroffat/LaFon in particular was a Dynamite Kid/Chris Benoit type talent with one of the most vicious snap suplexes around. A major lost opportunity. Furnas was a pretty good wrestler, as well. He was a strongman who could wrestle, similar to Davey Boy in his prime. The crowd was unbelievably hot, especially for the reserved Japanese crowds, and it was a bunch of great action. I give this match ***3/4. Very good, well worth the time to find and download.

That must be their WrestleMania 7 match because Monsoon and Hayes were the announcers during that one.

I was highlighting Kenta because Kenta Kobashi fucking rules. I don't care about another Kenta.
EDIT: Unless he's in several great matches like Kobashi, Misawa, Jumbo, and, to a lesser extent IMO, Kawada.
I gotta say KENTA is great. He's not much to look at but his selling is top notch and almost everything in his matches look good. Possibly the best worker of his type in the world from what I've seen.
NJPW 1997/01/04 - Great Muta vs. Power Warrior
Decent match. Mutoh's technique and Kensuke Sasaki's power made for a few good exchanges. They spent a lot of time on the floor and there were a few messy piledrivers dished out and use of weapons but nothing too vicious. Ending spot looked pretty sick with Sasaki pinning Mutoh with a Northern Lights driver onto a table.

Are you talking about the ladder match? I don't recall any other triple threats involving those three. If you are, I think four and a half stars is pretty freaking generous. It was good, but it was like 3 and a half stars good, maybe 3 and 3/4.
My WMOTD: Chris Candido, Nigel McGuinness, Claudio Castagnoli, and Steve Stone vs. CM Punk, Ace Steel, Matt Sydal, and Danny Daniels. As far as actual wrestling goes, it's average. As far as comedy goes, however, it's freaking gold. Much of the humor comes courtesy of Chris Candido, but just about everyone has some sort of wacky chicanery going on at some point. I recommend getting this match just due to the humor of it, but don't expect a four-plus star classic. Wrestling: ** Comedy: ***3/4

Survivor Series 1995: The Dark Side (Taker, Savio Vega, Fatu, and Henry Godwinn) vs. The Royals (King Mabel, Triple H, Jerry Lawler, and Isaac Yankem). This is a great match to watch for people who started watching wrestling during the Monday Night Wars or after. This way they can see that as bad as things seem to be right now, where the writers can't seem to come up with anything good, it used to be worse. A LOT worse. Umaga getting a strong push pales in comparison to King Mabel getting a sustained main event push. At least more wrestlers can work now. For those who were there, this was the first match where Taker wore that protective mask after getting his face crushed.

Just saw this match on WWE 24/7's primetime "Monday Night Wars" tv show collection. It was even better than I expected in a lot of ways. Without a doubt a gem lost forever in WCW's piles of crap. Easily the best match of the night. Just goes to show WCW's lousy booking, even at that time, when they were on top, they were making dumb desicions. They could've been pushing a guy like Malenko, or maybe even Regal. Instead in the main event of the night, we see Macho vs Flair number 65.

Macho vs. Flair was actually the feud that was gaining money for WCW at the time. The NWO had not yet become really hot, and the Savage/Flair matches were consistently pretty good. There was no reason to NOT make them the main event.

But that was WCW's problem, with each and every storyline. They'd run the horse until it broke a leg, and then run it some more. At this point, the fans were still into Flair/Macho, but, in my opinion, they ran it too long. They should've been building up the younger guys, rather than still pushing the older guys to the moon. I mean, Regal wasn't all that young, but he was fresh compaired to Flair, Macho, Hogan, etc. And what did WCW ever do with Regal, that was memorable? The only thing I remember them doing with him, that I really liked, was The Blue Bloods. Which was one of WCW's few good ideas, Chris Adams was a hell of a wrestler in his day. Akira Taue is the best carry job worker of all time. He's been in more great singles matches than probably 99% of everybody else, and he's been involved in what is generally called the greatest match of all time.
Taue is capable of bringing his A game for big matches. The same can not be said for Angle, Austin, HHH, or Bret fucking Hart. HBK is not in the same league for those who are niggers.
I'll reserve spraying Taue with a golden shower of praise until I see him do something that impresses me. Any one-on-one match I've seen him in was never all that. Prove me wrong Canucko.

My WMOTD: Steiners vs. Benoit/Liger, sometime in 1994, most likely. I LOVED this match. I am a mark for the Steiners in their prime (being one of my top three favorite tag teams) and Benoit. Liger is also a great worker. A bit overrated, but he's been in some great matches, and no one can deny his talent. It was interesting to see how the Steiners changed their styles to adapt more to the Japanese crowd. They are an underrated team, especially since Scott's shitty work over the last eight or nine years. This match features a very hot crowd. It features Chris Benoit getting dropped on his head three or four times that I thought he may have been legit hurt, including one after a botched top rope hurricanrana attempt. It features great amateur style wrestling by Scotty. It features an attempted Steiner DDT (remember that move?). It features a Steiner screwdriver. It features Liger's avalanche brainbuster. This match had me drawn in the whole time. The video screws up once or twice, but it's not really a big deal.

Yeah, but when they do, they make it freaking COUNT. Remember Muta vs. Flair? Probably the bloodiest I've ever seen Muta.
I consider Liger slightly (I stress slightly) overrated because some people say all of his matches are incredible. Most are, but some are merely mediocre. Case in point: Last year, he had a match in TNA vs. Samoa Joe. People were going nuts over that match and how awesome it was, and how it should have been a contender for MOTY, and crap like that. It was six minutes long, not even long enough to warm up the crowd, and it was a pretty standard match, for both of them. Therefore, he's slightly overrated because people will view everything he does as gold, whether it is or not. However, when he brings his A game, almost no one can touch him. His match vs. Pillman at SuperBrawl was probably the best match to take place on American soil that year. His matches vs. Benoit and Sasuke are staples of "Best of Junior Heavyweight Matches" compilations. He is great, just not as great as some nutjob fanboys make him out to be. Incidentally, these are generally the same people who say Joe vs. Kobashi was the best American match of all time.

Tajiri vs. Super Crazy, Mexican Death Match, January 21st, 2000 edition of ECW on TNN. This match was pretty good. Tajiri, when given the chance, can be entertaining as hell. He's got great comic timing, which came off a couple times in this match. This match also features a spot where Tajiri skims some chairs into the crowd really goddamn fast. I think some people got hit pretty bad with 'em, too. Awesome. Not the best match they've ever had, but still a solid *** match.

I think I'll do up some gook rasslin' too. Vader vs. Misawa. 10/30/99. I think this was the first rematch after Misawa upended Vader for the Triple Crown in May, and Vader came into this one looking for revenge. These two guys beat the snot out of each other. This is how a brawling match should be. I give it ***3/4.
Personally, I like how Vader comes off in his Japanese interviews, because he comes off as well-spoken and intelligent, instead of just some screaming, growling brute like he was in the States.

Famously physical early bout between Foley and Vader, the one where Vader cracked Foley with a few vicious punches in the face causing a lot of bleeding which had to be edited off WCW TV at the time. This match fit perfectly with this show, as just about every match didn't live up to it's full potential. These two had a good match, but just something missing from the middle of the match. But it really picks up towards the end. This show also had a hilarious, one night appearance by Shane Douglas, where the crowd shit all over him. He came out and said how much he loves RoH, and how he chose to be there instead of the WWECW show, and said Vince begged him to be there, to which the crowd chanted "You're a liar!" London/Kendrick vs. Kash/Noble, GAB 2006. After not watching this match for quite a while, it was almost surprising to me how much I forgot that I liked this match. It had a lot of old-school tag team psychology, and some pretty cool spots. The thing that stands out to me in this match is that the spots actually mean something. Example: when Noble dropkicked London to the outside when London was skinning the cat, you thought that may have cost him the match, and he continued to sell that one bump throughout most of the remainder of the match. Had the potential to be a lot better, but certainly the best tag team action you're going to see in the WWE today. ***1/4

A great little gem of a match in the midst of a pretty mediocre PPV.

Bret Hart vs. Doink, SummerSlam '93. This was a great angle with Lawler, and the commentary by Heenan is classic.

Other than the tag match the previous night, this was my first time seeing Shiozaki. I think I heard that he's a Kobashi protege? Anyways, I wouldn't mind seeing him wrestle again. On a related note, I also really enjoy SUWA.

I'm a sucker for multi-man matches. A few semi-botched spots in this one, and I could do without the brief-Aries run in at the end, but awesome action from everyone. Pelle was super over in this one too.

A short, fun, energetic and solid opener. Hero & Sweeney are just about perfect as a wrestler/manager duo.

If you get the chance, download the Nigel-AmDrag match they wrestled tonight in Philly at the ROH event. I think it was their best showing yet, and was easily the match of the night. It was also being taped for ROH's second PPV, so you can also see it there. I'd give it ****1/4.

Awesome. Yeah, i've been hearing a lot of great things about it, including that it's the best of their series. I loved their Unified match, and their matches at Generation Now and Weekend of Champions Night Two were all good too.
I was kind of confused about something though. Sydal was scheduled to wrestle Dragon, right? So they said Dragon was injured and couldn't wrestle Sydal, but then he wrestled Nigel? Did they explain that?
