Am I the only one who has noticed Abyss takes big bumps pretty much every week? If it isn't in an actual hardcore match, he is getting attacked by someone and taking bumps with glass, barbed wire, tacks etc. For example, The Christian Coalition's beatdown a few months back, or Judas Mesias debuting and destroying him. I appreciate these are big angles, but most of the time it seems he is jus thrown into hardcore matches for no reason.
I am not complaining as such, because I love seeing him in these environments and believe this is what he does best (His best of DVD is gimmick match after gimmick match). However, there are several problems with the way TNA are using him. First of all, people will think he can't do anything else, when this is not the case. I have already heard people start to say he is a stuntman, or he has no talent and just takes bumps to make up for it. It is easy to see how they have come to this conclusion considering he only seems to be in hardcore matches, and ridiculous ones at that (eg Genesis, Monster's Ball etc) Speaking of Monster's Ball, that brings me to my next point. That used to be a huge match, but it isn't anymore. Why? Because TNA book hardcore matches so often, and use weapons such as barbed wire bats so often, that it becomes meaningless. What is there to seperate the 'big' hardcore matches such as Monster's Ball, from all the other hardcore matches Abyss gets thrown into? Monster's Ball probably would have been something more special this year if Mesias had not got injured, but that is no real excuse. It will soon get to the point when no TNA hardcore match is a reason to get excited. Why pay your money for a PPV when you can see the same thing happen to Abyss on Impact every week for free?
Once again I feel I have to say that I really enjoy Abyss in hardcore environments, and in feuds against mysterious characters like Judas Mesias, Raven, Mitchell etc (and to a lesser extent Black Reign) and that is why I am concerned. I love Abyss in these feuds and think TNA might ruin it by overdoing it. That and people saying Abyss are talentless are my main concerns. Anyone who has seen a lot of Abyss in normal matches will know that he is a very good wrestler, especially for his size. His willingness to take bumps is a great quality no doubt, and he reminds me of Foley in that way. However, I feel he has many other qualities which TNA are not letting him show, and that they will take the way the impact of his bump-taking quality by using it too much.
What are your thoughts on Abyss and the amount of bumps he takes ?
